Exhaust Fumes 3200 Open - Walker - 09-26-2014

Have noticed exhaust fumes in the cockpit and helm area while underway and twice the cabin carbon monoxide detector alarm in the cabin went off even with the door always closed.
Seems as though I've heard of this before somewhere.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so has there been any remedy for this problem?

This is a serious problem. CO is a silent killer. Give us some more information. Generator running, traveling down wind, trolling, side windows or forward hatch closed ? Where are your exhausts including your generator exhaust? Has the boat been modified? Did you add a new canvas setup ? Is this a station wagon effect? Until you resolve the problem I would make sure the CO detector always has fresh batteries and perhaps add a second detector. The first symptom of CO poisoning is usually a head ache. Get plenty of fresh air. Capt. George

Listen to Capt George. Find the source of this problem as soon as you can. I'm assuming you checked for an exhaust leak from your generator. Is your generator on when you have this problem?

Thanks for your concerns.
By the way, it's not the generator as I haven't been using it underway and I have checked for exhaust leaks and always run with my blowers on.
I believe it is a "Station Wagon Effect" and have sent a message to Tiara but so far no reply. Reading up, have found various other boat types with the same condition and some remedies include rerouting exhaust. Tiara has given relief to some owners by providing labor coverage if the owner pays for parts. Their fix is an underwater exhaust system.
What I can't understand is why some models are affected and others not. I haven't heard of this complaint from the majority of 3200 Open owners but clearly it's a problem for a a substantial number of people.
Thanks again.

If they can't smell CO and they can't see CO how would they know they have a CO problem. They may think their headache is from too much sun and too much beer. Fortunately you have a CO detector that works. Capt. George

Does your exhaust go out the back or the side? Is this problem
eliminated (cabin smell) if you run with the canvas down? Or do you have a hardtop?

Exhaust Fumes 3200 Open - Walker - 10-10-2014

My exhaust goes out the back not the side.
I have never experienced the problem with the canvas down but, mid summer, who wants to run with the canvas enclosing the cockpit.
I have a factory hardtop which is the best thing since apple pie.
Also, I have tried various combinations of opening and closing hardtop hatches and the center windshield vent.
It seems to be a factor of speed and wind direction from what I can see.
I have learned that air coming up over the bow, crossing the hardtop and then rolling down and over the transom causes a backdraft of sorts which rolls forward again into the cockpit.
Seems like an aerodynamic problem.
Hope there is an answer somewhere.

You might want to try something as simple as a hardtop spoiler. This would break up and redirect the airflow over the hardtop and possibly break the back draft. I'd make something from cardboard and duct tape it in place to test with different angles on the spoiler.

Just and idea from and old racer Smile

I love the lines of the factory hardtop and I've put one on my 36. Wouldn't want to change the lines with a spoiler. Since your exhaust is going out the back I think your best bet is to do what they did on the 4000 express models and install some extensions that redirect your exhaust to the side.

jmk,
Any chance you would have a photograph of the redirected exhaust on a 4000 express or maybe give me an idea of where to look?
Thanks
