ICOM VHF Radios - Uhehner - 04-06-2015 If you read my earlier posts about marine electronics you know I have my favorite and hated brands. Well I just got an Icom 504 that does not transmit or receive because the manufacturer installed some bad filters way back. This is a known issue and my unit is OUT of WARRANTY. My question is this " Why was a notice not sent to all M504 unit owners about a known defect on a safety related item like a VHF ? I asked ICOM this question and am awaiting a reply. I may want to cross ICOM off my recommendation list. Capt. Let us know Icom's response please. Seems a lot of people have been getting them fixed for free but that was some year ago even though units were out of warranty. RE: ICOM VHF Radios - Uhehner - 04-10-2015 I got a response from Icom. Filter failures are a normal thing and NOT COVERED by any extended warranty. It's strange that my failure was the same as the "Bad batch of filters" that were covered. That does not explain why my 25 year old Icom M58 still works or my 30 year old spare Icom M55 still works. I'll pay the repair charge but lower Icom on my list of recommended electronics. Standard Horizon and Furuno are now at the top. I'll also recommend that Icom go back to their 30 year old filter supplier. It's a piece of safety gear, like a life raft I expect it to work when I need it. Capt. George |
