Gel Batteries vs. Sealed Lead Acid? - BeechBuoy - 06-04-2015
I have two house batteries that won't keep a charge. I am wondering whether to go with gel again, which are $$$$ or SLA.
I currently have a C-Charger 5000 Series 30 amp charger that Charles Industries just told me will work on both gel and SLA.
My question, as long as all four batteries are the same, gel or SLA, will this be ok? I'm wondering if the person who answered my call is correct because it seemed she was just reading from a screen and had no knowledge herself.
Will this charger work on both SLA and gel with AGM being the outlier? I appreciate any help.

The information they gave you is correct regarding changing over to SLA's. If you elect to consider AGM, you'll need to do more research. I think you'll find that the charge rate on most AGM's is not compatible with that Charger. I recently upgraded to Lifeline AGM's this past fall (97 3100 Open) and upgraded the charger as well (new Charles charger with three settings: LA, Gel, AGM). If you have an adjustable voltage regulator, that will need to be checked as well with a switch to AGM's. Hope this helps...just do your homework....
