DAMAGE TO CUMMINS 315 ON MY 99 TIARA 31 - ivan - 06-27-2012

MY PORT ENGINE BROKE 3 VALVE SPRINGS AND DAMAGED AT LEAST ONE VALVE/PISTON/SLEEVE. WILL NEED TO PULL OUT AND OVERHAUL. ENGINEER REPORTS THE SALT WATER PUMP ON THAT ENGINE IS OUT OF VIEW AND EASY TO NEGLECT WHEN IT LEAKS OR GIVES OUT. WE JUST HAD IT REPLACED 1 WEEK BEFORE THE DAMAGE BECAUSE WE KEPT LOOSING OIL PRESSURE DUE TO SALT WATER MIXED IN WITH THE OIL.
IT DOESN

Salt water can mix with the oil if you have a bad / leaking oil heat exchanger. I would pull it also and pressure test it. You did not say what engines you have.

The Cummins 315 you are talking about is a 5.9 liter. They are parent bored and do not have sleeves. I can't think of any way for the salt water to get into the oil unless from the exhaust or if both seals on the seawater pump have failed ( not likely). The oil cooler is on the closed loop with antifreeze.
Do the valve springs show any signs of rust?

I'm near positive that pump is gear driven. If the rear pump seal failed, it could easily dump saltwater into the oil. If that pump was installed one week before the failure, where did you get the pump and who installed it? If a marine service center supplied and installed the pump, I would be looking to them to repair/replace the damaged engine. If you purchased the pump and you installed it, you are likely going to be out of luck as there is no way to determine if the failure was due to shipping damage, installation damage or both.

There are other items that can mix sea-water with the engine oil such as the oil cooler and head gasket. Are you sure that it is the raw water pump that failed?

Sorry to hear of your trouble and hopefully is repairable.

If the exhaust is either designed wrong or the internals of the exhaust shower has corroded, it is easy to get salt water to feed back into the turbo charger and then inside the exhaust and past the rings to the oil. Best place to ask such a question about this would be boatdiesel.com or sbmar.com. Try to get Tony Athens to respond on boatdiesel.com or call him and ask at sbmar.com which is his company. He will ask for photos all around the engine and alot of histroy but he will get to the bottom of the problem I guarantee it. He is an expert on Cummins and has helped many many people solve problem very similar if not exactly like this. $25 to join boatdiesel.com and well worth the investment for a full year of use. You will not be sorry to do as I recommend above. You will get many many answers which will save you time and eventually lots of money.
