Transmission Fluid Venting through hull - desjef - 07-17-2016

My 2000 29 Open transmission  was slipping and I found the fluid was very low.

I filled the case to near the limit, ran the engine to heat the Fluid and then filled it to the indicated fill level.

The slipping stopped and the boat ran great in the sea trial.

But back at the dock I noticed pink fluid leaking from the through the hull vent. (see att.)[attachment=217][attachment=217]

There is no fluid in the bilge and the fluid in the tranny is clear, mo "Milkshake" like liquid when water mixes with Transmission fluid.

Anyone seen this condition?

Just a guess but that picture looks like the bilge pump thru-hull and the pump came on while you were running and dumped the water and transmission fluid overboard. I would check the shift lever "O" rings, they are noted for failing and it's an easy fix. Changing the input and output shaft seals is a big job and the transmission needs to be pulled. Also look at the transmission oil cooler for leaks. Capt.  George

Thanks Capt. George. Checks make sense before they pull the tranny.

Capt. Jeff.

Capt., They found the lines were old and brittle which was the source of the leak. So all good without having to pull the tranny or other drastic measures.

It may come as no surprise that the first boatyard said "Tranny no good", needs teardown/rebuild. And while we are at it, you probably need new transmission coolers. (New this spring, same boatyard).

Moral of the story? Talk to Capt. George before shelling out money. Wink

Thanks again Skipper.
