454 crusader question - Persistence - 05-15-2013 Hi all, have a '94 31' with 454's. looks like a raw water pump is bad on port motor. Local shop had it in stock, my buddy went to pick it up and found its not the right 'proprietory' part. Does this make sense? I guessnthey found one for about double the money in florida. Im in boston. He's going back to see if it can be rebuilt. Thanks 454 crusader question - Chris Burkard - 05-16-2013 The pumps can be rebuilt provided the shaft and hub area of the pump were not damaged when the pump failed. The most common failure is the shaft seal goes and the pump begins to leak water from the front seal. This should be a common pump. I'm guessing, but $300 rebuilt and $500.00 new? 454 crusader question - Persistence - 05-16-2013 Thanks! The plot thickens. I guess the pump is pretty standard but it has an extended shaft. So the normal pump won't reach the pulley / belt system without tweaking it. Looks like I'm going for the new special pump. Old what is pitted so not much point in rebuilding and waiting for it to fail again... Question is why the extended shaft? 454 crusader question - Chris Burkard - 05-17-2013 My guess is General Motors makes adjustments to engines and Crusader has to adjust for those changes as they are made when the marinize the engines. The engines are not built with boats in mind, they are built for cars and trucks and it is up other users of the engines to adjust them to their needs. Perhaps they changed the pulley set up that year causing Crusader to make a pump change. Just a guess. Sincerely, |
