Generator removal - maddie - 05-17-2017

I am looking to remove my diesel Westerbeke generator from my 31' Tiara. Has anyone tackled this project? Any recommendations?

I hardly use it and would like the space and access instead.

If and when you ever decide to sell the boat, the lack of a generator might have a great effect on the value of your boat.

I'm also thinking of removing an inoperable Westerbeke generator. It needs a new back end, and i don't think it's worth putting $15k into a 20 year old generator that i rarely used. Anyone have suggestions on removal? Parting it out? Inverter? Portable generator for the rare occasion i might need it? Thanks in advance

A friend recently went through this. After much thought, he decided to remove his badly broken generator and not replace it in kind. Instead, he opted to add a lithium battery bank, inverter, and a small Honda portable generator. The Honda is just used to recharge the lithium bank on occasion.

I did that on my 31. Removed and replaced the back end of generator. Bought a rebuilt From Broward Armature in Florida. You'll need to remove both inboard exhaust pipes. I used a small chain fall off the arch to raise the deck as high as it would go. Then removed the Gen with the chain fall. Was actually pretty easy to remove. Needed to remove heat exchanger, mounting rails, exhaust etc from gen. The rebuilt from Broward was appox $4,500 shipped to me. That also was very easy repair to do too.
