Cleaning the 50 amp cable - CaptBrett - 07-02-2017
So i have a glen denning cable master on our 38. The cable is nasty dirty, and needs a major clean up.... any good solutions form our Tiara friends?

I found acetone works well. doesnt seem overly aggressive and cleans the cable right up.

I also own a 38 Open w/Glendenning cable retriever and tried to use a product specifically made to clean the cable.... Don't use it. Although the cable gets clean I believe the stuff has a wax in it to protect the cable.... As a result the cable slips when retrieving it..... Had to re-clean w/soft scrub to remove the wax.... After that the cable retrieved normally.... M2C.... Thought acetone might be a little strong for the cable material but may try in the future....

Acetone will work but it will make the cable sticky and then it attracts dirt. A better cleaner is toluene which works as well but does not damage the finish on the cable.

I have the same problem on our 3900 Sovran. I used BleachWhite on a 4' area to see how it worked ....this is the stuff they sell in the automotive section for whitewall tires. I sprayed it, let it sit for a minute, then used a damp sponge with integrated scrubber...it worked really well. I don't think it harmed the rubber. Haven't gotten to the rest...

I use a Brillo pad. Takes some elbow grease but does not leave a residue like Acetone

Try methyl ethyl ketone just wear nitrile gloves when using it. then apply 303 vinyl protectant.

A product called Marine Strip works awesome! Smells like acetone but they say you can use it in vinyl, which I did also on the bolster around the cockpit of my 41. Worked great. I did follow it up with a leather/vinyl cleaner with mink oil. It's a little tacky, but dries quickly and doesn't stay tacky at all. Highly recommend.

Toluene also works very well and does make make cords tacky as acetone does. It is cheap and comes in decent sized containers. I like it because it works like a boat product without the rip off pricing of a boat cord cleaner product. Learned about it from a guy who details big boats for a living.
