I will be downsizing soon. Considering a 36 or 38 open. Any thoughts, preferences one over the other? Also pod drives vs. straight inboards.

what year 36 are you looking at? I am going to assume a newer one since you are talking pods. Newer design 36 is a real poor design, not much room downstairs. I would opt for straight drivers vs pods myself as I have heard many that have had costly damage done to the pods. Not by impact but from for example, lines wrapping around the prop and shaft, straight drive repair fairly straight forward but no so much on pods.

presently own a 38' Open (2003) and am more than please with the boat and its performance, straight drives.... IMO the 38 is a better choice as its much bigger overall than the 36' The 14' beam and 2' extra length gives the boat a bigger boat feel all around, especially in rough water..... Cabin space is substantially bigger and the head has a separate shower.....Performance for the 450 HP Cummin's @ 2100 RPM is 28 GPH. Speed 24.5kts..... Great for a boat that is 24000+ lbs.

Your question is a tough one as both the 36 and 38 are great boats. Perhaps I can shed some light on the matter:

The 3600 Open went into production sometime around 2005/2006 as a replacement for the 3500 Open. The 3600 shared the hull bottom with the 3500, but that is where the similarities end. The 3600 Open was originally offered in Gas, of which very few were built. Most were built with the twin Cummins QSB 380 HP. A handful where built with the Cummins QSB 425 HP. Sometime in 2008/2009 Tiara stopped offering the straight inboard set up and opted for the Volvo IPS System. These boats had the Volvo IPS 500s. The 36 with Straight inboards is an awesome boat! It is fast with either 380 or 425 Cummins (29/31 knot cruise respectively) and with 400 gallons of fuel, capable of 330 nautical mile range at cruising speed based on 90% of fuel usage. The Volvo IPS 36 is a nice running boat and is more efficient than the straight inboards, but because the boat is designed for fishing a was originally designed for straight inboards, you do not get the full advantage of IPS. Layout remains the same, range is the same (due to decreased fuel tankage), speed is only slightly faster and costs to maintain are higher than the inboard diesels. I prefer the straight inboards in this particular vessel due to their simplicity and lower cost of ownership.

The 3800 Open originally went into production in 1997 and stayed in production until 2008. An impressive run and shows the popularity of this model. The 38 is 11" wider than the 36 and overall feels considerably larger. The 38s were originally offered with Cummins C series engines or CAT 3208s. Both completely mechanical diesel engines. The Cummins are inline 6 engines and make for better engine access, but the 3208 CAT is also a great engine in terms of reliability and ease of service. Both of these engines are no longer in production as mechanical diesels no longer meet emissions levels. In 2005 Tiara began offering the Cummins 480 CE which was a mechanical engine with electronic fuel injection. A big improvement over the C engine with less smoke, lower noise levels and less fuel burn. Just a year later Tiara began offering the QSC a fully electronic diesel which is still in production today.

You can't go wrong with either boat. If you want more details, it would be best to call me

Sincerely,

All Chris said is true but Believe the 38 was first introduced in 2001...... Tiara had a 37 in 1997 but significantly different from the 2001-2008 38
