38 Open - How to access Racor to drain - CaptGregSTX - 05-31-2018
This may be a very simple question, but I was hoping for some tips or tricks to accessing the Racor drains...they are adjacent to the generator and very hard to reach, even with my long arms.
Also, I can't seem to get a wrench on the drains as the tunnel drive part of the hull is kind of in the way.
I wanted to install the add-on peacock valves to make draining a cinch, but it doesn't look like there is enough room on the port side to do that (again, the tunnel drive part of the hull is in the way). To make matters worse, it feels like the drain plugs may be slightly corroded, but I can't get my head close enough to take a look.
Hoping someone has some advice or tricks regarding the Racors on the 38 Open. Thanks!

You described the same problem I went through on my 2003 38 Open... There is no magic solution that I'm aware of... Had same problem, even with my long arms...... I purchased brass elbows, extension nipples, & valves for each Racor....After many hrs and removing starboard engine parts I got to the drain on the bottom of the Racor and installed the elbow, extension and ball valve (did the same on the port side)... Now its easy to drain the Racors.... Maybe someone has another answer/solution but that is what I did... M2C.. Good luck.....

That's what I would have recommended. I had a similar problem with my setup where the filter bottom was on top of a stringer and I couldn't get anything under it to catch the fuel/water. Ended up plumbing a 90 degree off a ball valve with a hose barb then a short piece of hydraulic hose with a capped flare fitting that I tie wrap to the side of the housing. When I need to drain the racor I cut the tie wrap, uncap the hose and open the valve.
