helm A/c help trouble shooting - sluggo - 08-06-2018
I dont know if my helm A/c is having a problem or is it operator error.
I switch the helm A/c on (and its plenty hot outside) the fan turns on, and the control panel down in the cabin looks like it has random numbers on it (counting down?)
any way, no water comes out of the side for like 10 minutes in seems. And that makes me nervous, but no codes get thrown so I let it kick on, and everything seems to be working fine.
But then it throws a breaker and of course shuts off. (the other 2 inside cabin A/c are on as well when it throws the breaker, and we are on show power, which according to the meter was fine)
The next day I thought perhaps I had set the temp too low (65 f) so I raised it up to 75f. But again no water was coming out the side, so I shut it down, and thought I would ask you guys, WTF. TIA

A couple of questions:
Is the compressor coming on?
Is the pump relay sending power to the seawater pump?
What A/C system do you have?

I assume it is, as I said eventually it does pump water

make sure the A/C pumps are on.

I have a 2003 38 Open with 2 Marine Air A/C units and the following description is the way they are rigged... On the main power panel there are 3 breakers. One for the Sea Water Pump and one for each unit... If the Sea Water Pump breaker is off or if the Sea Water Pump fails to start/run the unit(s) will shut down (a code is displayed on the digital control panel). Just because water is coming out doesn't mean the A/C compressor is working correctly. All it means is the Sea Water Pump is functioning and told to come on via the A/C pump relay.... M2C

guys thanks for all of the answers. I am pretty sure I dont have a problem. it 'counts down' to pre cool the air. Once that is done, everything kicks on as it should. The one thing that is different , it seems to work differently when the genny is running vs shore power. When on shore power it does the count down thing, when on the genny, the everything kicks on and starts to work, cools the air, and pumps good water over the side.
Now if I could only get the genny to run for more than 1/2 hr I will be in good shape!! And for the record we have changed about everything you could change, impeller, fuel pump, high temp switch, low oil switch, the anti siphon on the carb, a couple of back flushes. Not many parts left!!

guys update, I think it was operator error, flipped it on this weekend and worked perfectly!! thanks
