Cruising the ICW - Brian - 10-29-2013 What can I expect the economics to be cruising the ICW at 5 to 10 knots in a 40? What are the negatives and plusses? Cruising the ICW - RickT - 10-29-2013 The below curtecy of Chris Burkhart is for a 35' with 450 HP Cummins. A 40' should be close. You should be able to get 2 miles per gallon or better up to around 900 RPM's and probably 7 to 8 knots. Not sure where you are starting but it is about 1000 nautical miles from Connecticut to Lauderdale. So, 500 to 600 gallons should do it. If you can keep your hands off the throttles. You won't. Add charges for dockage and dinners and go for it. Running the ICW is a once in a life time rewarding event as long as you keep plugged into the local knowledge to be aware of where the shoaling has changed the channel. Most areas have usually been remarked. I have made the trip 10 times but not since fuel went over $2 a gallon. I would highly recommend you do this. RPM MPH Knots GPH MPG dB,A Trim Angle Estimated Range (Statue Miles) 700 6.3 5.5 2.4 2.63 1.0 836 1000 9.0 7.8 5.0 1.80 2.0 575 1500 11.8 10.3 16.4 0.72 7.0 230 2000 26.0 22.6 24.0 1.08 6.5 350 2200 30.0 26.1 27.6 1.09 5.5 350 2400 33.4 29.0 33.2 1.01 5.0 320 2600 35.5 30.9 41.3 0.86 4.0 275 2670 37.0 32.2 45.7 0.82 4 260 Cruising the ICW - Uhehner - 10-30-2013 I have made the trip numerous times at speed when someone else was paying the fuel bill. At hull speed ( no rise in the bow) you can smell the roses and get great mileage. I would recommend an autopilot with a hand held remote so you can sit back and relax. There are long stretches of nothing but swamp and bugs. Also a big chart plotter that will show the magenta line and an up to date paper Chartkit book and the ICW Waterway Guide. West Marine has a great collection of books on the trip. Remember the ICW is not well maintained so prepare for shoal water and missing markers. If you need an experienced mate, I can be ready in a heartbeat. Just feed me and keep me warm. Capt. George Cruising the ICW - anthem - 10-30-2013 It can be a trip of a lifetime if you take your time. If you run outside to "make time" you miss so much and it will be BORING! My last trip north on my boat I took a month from St Petersburg FL to CT. We went Trawler speed all the way. It was fabulous! I agree with the others, make sure you have the lastest chart kits, and all the other guides you can find. I found the Skipper Bob books to be helpful with marinas, fuel cost, hazards on the ICW, and anchorages. Their web site used to give you all the updates on the hazards. Don't know about now. You have to keep alert on the ICW. If you just follow the Magenta Line on your chartplotter you will most assuredly go aground. Great trip! Don't miss it. Cruising the ICW - Uhehner - 10-31-2013 Don't miss a stay at the Coinjock Marina in N.C. They have a 2" prime rib that will make you want to come back. We overnight there on every trip no matter what time of day we get there. Also consider the moon cycle. Try to travel at mid cycle. A full moon gives lots of current and a moon low makes for some skinny water. Capt. George Cruising the ICW - Persistence - 11-21-2013 I've done it mainly running outside in a few sportfish boats. I love the trip. Boston to Lauderdale and back. fuel and range werent really a problem (not my boats ), so if you can make 200 miles a day, it'll take about a week. One day we relaxed and did 30 miles on the river in NC. It's a great trip! I'd really like to take my time and go slow taking a few weeks...one of these daysCruising the ICW - Chris Burkard - 11-22-2013 Below is a 40 with Cummins 450s.
