2004 4200 Open Mid Bilge Water - sangelo911 - 10-18-2018
My Mid Bilge fills with water when the fresh water system is pressurized either with the pumps or city water connect. Wanted to see if anyone can suggest a plan of attack to try and figure this puzzle out? Thanks in advance and I look forward to your comments.

By mid do you mean the keel bilge in the engine room? Or the forward bilges under the salon? If the 42 is laid up the same as the 43 the two spaces are bulkhead separated so it will help narrow things down. I just had the exact same problem and it was the hot water heater relief valve leaking. I opened and closed it a couple of times and it reseated itself.
If the leak is not obvious one trick is to sprinkle talcum power up and down the bilge spaces and then look for tell tails where the water is leaking. should give you a clue.

Hello, It is the keel bilge in the engine room. I did have a small leak just as you described from the heater but that has been remedied. The leak comes primarily from under where the batteries are located and some comes from the port side of the keel bilge pump.
The AC also produces water into the same bilge but I know that I will need to place a drain to the sump to eliminate that issue.
Very much a pain in the backside to try and figure out. I wish that there was a plumbing/fresh water diagram so that I could at least go through a process.

Don't know the 42 layout so not sure how much help I can provide. My batteries are center line above the keel bilges. The only fresh water source that could leak there would have to come from one of the water lines/fittings on the bulkhead, leaking down and running along the platform that he batteries sit on. You should be able to trace all the pressure lines as they are blue for cold and red for hot. Ice makers tend to leak but that should be obvious on the ceiling of the ER.
There's usually a shutoff on the hot water heater. You may want to close the valve and isolate part of the system so you know if you are chasing one side or the other.
I've herd of people putting dye in the dock side water using a water filter cartridge. That always seemed a little extreme to me but I guess as long as it is not permanent and you use food safe dyes and you flush like crazy afterwards may help.

Thanks for the advice. Weather is changing rapidly up here so this will most likely need to be a 2019 adventure. I am afraid that I am going to need to tear out the batteries and the platform they sit on (just like the one you described) in order to find the primary source of the leak. One leak at a time. Spent some more time in the engine compartment and finally heard a slight gurgle like noise when I pressurized the water system. Cold water 90 degree elbow that is in the farthest corner wedged between the AC unit and the port side hull. Not going to be easy to get to but I can see it actually coming out. More than half the battle done. I will claim a small victory for now and until I 100% remedy the issue. Thanks.
