US Coast Guard Documented Vessel - JSK - 12-02-2013

Thanks

My 31 Open was documented. The catalog states an approximate dry weight of 10,500 lbs. Net tonnage is a measure of a vessel's volume. It should not be confused with the vessel's weight, which may also be expressed in tons. Most vessels more than 25 feet in length will measure five net tons or more. Capt. George

The weight of a vessel and Gross Tonnage are two different measurements and are easy to confuse.

Per Wikipedia Tonnage is a measure of the size or cargo carrying capacity of a ship. The term derives from the taxation paid on tuns or casks of wine, and was later used in reference to the weight of a ship's cargo; however, in modern maritime usage, "tonnage" specifically refers to a calculation of the volume or cargo volume of a ship. Tonnage should not be confused with Displacement which refers to the loaded or empty weight of the vessel itself.

My 36 Sovran has a weight of 23,000lbs and gross tonnage of 24. You can find the documentation data on any vessel at the following web site. [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

Hope this helps.

I would think a 31 is greater than because my 29 is 10,500 and is documented with the Coast Guard.

The Marine title company I used for the transaction did the USCG documented vessel application and calculated the gross and net based on the USCG formula. Based on that formula the 3100 came in at 14 gross and 11 net tons.
