Impeller failures - Coppifan - 05-07-2019

Both of the impellers on my 2000, 3100 Open , have failed. Within days. Did not ground. What on earth could have caused this?
Could it be a failure in my flush out system? Water draining from the raw water intakes when I put the boat on the lift? I never run the engine dry.

Impellers wear out. When was the last time they were replaced? Cummins, for example, recommends replacing the impellers every 500 hours or every year.

They're made out of rubber, at best, they only last 3 years or so.

Impeller are a wearable item and should be changed regularly. I keep a spare set on the boat at all times

Since both engines usually are run about the same I always figure that if something goes bad on one the other is not far behind. I always buy 2 of everything and figure I will be using the other one fairly quickly.

Make sure you (or your mechanic) locates all the pieces! They can (and will) clog cooling passages.

It takes a couple of seconds of dry running after you’ve been on the lift for water to run through the pump and start lubricating it.

Next time open the impeller cover and prelubricate the impeller. Liberal application of dishwashing liquid is how I do it. Use the opportunity to inspect your impeller!

by using the dish washing soap you not only lube the impellers but you can see the soap in the exhaust when started
