Overview - Tiara 2900 Coronet - Chris Burkard - 01-08-2014
I get a lot of questions about specific Tiara Models and what are the pros, cons, performance and so on and so forth. I thought I would give an overview of each model as time allows. Obviously this is going to take me a lot of time, but I thought I would start with the Tiara 2900 Coronet.
I love the 29 Coronet. It is the near perfect day boat. It has just enough cabin for day use, it is large enough and stable enough to be comfortable for a family and is beefy enough to handle moderate sea-conditions. It is simple, comfortable without all of the fluff that makes boat ownership a hassle. It has inboards and therefore can be left in the water year round (unlike I/Os or Jets) and its docking manners are much much better than a comparable outboard of this size even if the outboard boat has a bow thruster. It is a tough boat that can take a beating and they are relatively inexpensive to maintain compared to other manufacturers. One of the most attractive qualities of the 29 Coronets is pricing. The 29 Coronets have depreciated to the point where you can purchase a fixer upper as low as $30k - $40k, a newer ready to run condition Coronet for $65k - $75k or a newer still, near perfect condition and loaded with upgraded modern equipment for $100k - $115k. Considering a new outboard boat in this size range with half the deck space is $300,000.00 plus, a nice clean 29 Coronet is an outright deal!

Hard to believe 1.66 mpg. Wow!
That makes going to Marathon Key and back (clearwater harbor) very affordable.
What's strange is the RPM's @ 1.66....seams to be about 85-90% of WOT.

1.66 MPG is only achievable by the Volvo Diesel 29 Coronet. I only know of a few that were ever built with this option. I do remember one being repowered with Yanmar Diesels, but I do not remember the performance.
Diesels run best at 80 - 85% Load and they are designed to do so. Gas engines work best at about 60 - 70% load. That's engine loading, not percentage of throttle. The best speed to run a vessel is where the MPG is the best running on plane. This is the most efficient spot. Keep in mind that sea-conditions can dictate your cruising speed. Obviously if the most efficient speed has you holding on for dear life, slow down!
The 6.0L Coronets (2005/2006) had a best of 1.26 MPG @ 24 Knots (1.25 MPG @ 26 Knots)
The 8.1L Coronets (2003/2006) had a best of 1.14 MPG @ 26 Knots
