I'm not sure of the size but I think it's 1/4" . I would not recommend FLAX packing. I always install GFO Gore-Tex packing (go to e-Bay) and never touch the stuffing box again. It seems to last forever. Capt. George

The GFO is great stuff lasts forever as capt. George says 1/4" for 1 1/2 shaft.
