sand blasting - waycamp - 11-16-2019 I have a 2004 29 open used in saltwater in the North East. I bottom paint each year. this year when hauled have some chipping and electrolysis around hardware. It was suggested I sand blast bottom and apply a barriar coat with 4 coats of paint. somewhat expensive. Warranted? or some good sanding? RE: sand blasting - jclark003 - 11-16-2019 Chipping and flaking can be the result of too much buildup or incompatible paints. Not really a problem except possibly scrubbing off a little speed. Resale may also take a hit which is something to consider. If you do proceed you may want to look at ferrule blasting as it is much cleaner and easier on the bottom. Stripping the bottom is often expensive work especially if blisters need to be addressed. I would be more concerned if there is evidence of electrolysis and would address that before blasting the bottom. Electrolysis can quickly destroy underwater hardware, fuel tanks, running gear etc. if you think you have an electrolysis issue (or galvanic for that matter) you should have a professional look into it asap. M2C RE: sand blasting - waycamp - 11-17-2019 Thanks for your reply. There is some electrolysis around painted area around seacocks. paint is chipping and some green around metal screens. Zincs are working and no other issue except where noted. I assume rather than blast, these areas can be sanded and repainted with the appropiate paint. My concern is the bottom buildup 14 years of paint and chipping....Prefer not to go through that expense but wonder if it is the best way to proceed. RE: sand blasting - jclark003 - 11-17-2019 a clean bottom looks good and will help the boat perform a little better. Conversely a messy bottom quite often results in a lower selling price. given what you have described it doesn't sound like the bottom needs to be stripped so there is no real right or wrong answer. RE: sand blasting - OurHighLife - 12-27-2019 Have the paint removed by blasting (sand, crushed shells or whatever is used) Then 3-5 coats of "Interpotect ", then bottom paint. Some people used a coat of a different color, then last coat of the color you want to see, then if you see the underlying color you know its time to repaint sand blasting - bsause - 12-27-2019 Just had my sovran blasted it's a 06 and, tons of old paint did a barrier coat and new paint Will be worth every penny Capt Brett M Sause USCG Master Licensed Captain 443-220-4339 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
