Tiara Open 3100 - missing windless for anchor - Tgilbert - 11-20-2019

The previous owner had removed the windless, but the wiring harness is still in tact.  It currently has chain/rope and approx 18 pound anchor.  What model windless would you recommend for this Tiara 31 Open?

Thanks,
Tom

A maxwell rc-8 rope chain windlass would work. Most tiaras in the early 2000's came from factory with maxwells.

thank you.  This is a 1994 Tiara 3100 open.  would the windless have been installed where the current metal hatch cover is located in the photo of my original post?

I'm not familiar with those years but that would seem to be to far forward. Usually there's a cleat where the metal hatch is and the windlass would be aft of that but it looks like there's a anchor locker hatch there. The best place for a windlass is directly over the deepest area of the anchor locker so you have the most freefall of rode.

My 1995 31 Open, purchased 4 years ago, came with the windlass mounted directly on the hatch to the anchor rope locker. Great idea until its time to replace the windlass when you have to rebuild the darn hatch. I can't tell if Tiara installed it that way or one of its owners.

I have a 95’ 31 open and it has a maxwell.

And yes it’s installed where your hatch is and the cut out for mine is smaller then your hatch.

Sandy,
can you provide a photo of your windless install?

Getting ready to install a Maxwell windless anchor where one was once installed.  Wiring harness remains but the windless has been removed and a plate was installed to cover the opening.  For Tiara 3100 open with Maxwell windless anchors, do  they typically have model RC-8 or RC-10.  The thread indicates RC-8, but I have rope/chain combination with 3/18" chain which would require the larger RC-10.

Trying to figure out if I should replace the 20" chain with 5/16" and purchase the RC-8, or go with the larger RC-10?  Would really like to get some opinions.  Thanks.

You can only use what the gypsy is designed to use. Look in the manual for the windlass or on the gypsy itself, do not try to use anything different as it will destroy the gypsy over time.
