Teak and holy floors - m.t.bentz - 12-03-2019
Has anyone redone there teak and holy floors in the salon , if so what varnish did you use or Tiara recommend .

Yes I just did this on a 43 Open. Steamed out the divits, scuffed the floor with a red scotchbrite pad, masked off the walls, cleaned everything and covered the floor with what Tiara recommended, a low luster urathane finish by Repcolite. Tiara pretty much said any good manufacturer urathane would work but I choose to use their OEM finish. Came out beautiful. I wiped a section down with tack rags, applied the varnish using a small 1/4" nap roller and tipped it with a very good cabin brush. Pour a couple ounces of urethane into a tray at a time. If the brush starts to pull just put a couple drops of mineral spirits to thin it back out. Had the entire job done in a weekend. Recommend you practice on the small floor hatches before starting the main floor. Good luck.

Hey thanks for the advice , i take it you used a Iron to steam out the divits , also did you sand down to the original wood . The previous owner had a large dog he took boating , there are scratches threw out the flooring , hopefully not into the wood it self .

I cut a small slit in center of divit with razor, then used an iron and wet rag to swell up the wood. Takes a while and the rag needs to be flipped and keep wet.
No need to sand down to bare wood. A light scuff should be enough to provide a mechanical bond for new urethane. If the scratches are into the wood you may need a fine/220 grit paper. If you do sand down to bare wood be advised that those sections will be a little lighter for a season or two.

I would not sand to the bare wood. You are making a mountain out the job. Just a light sand and cleaning. If you sand through to the bare wood you will need to touch up those areas with stain to match. I have refinished three boat floors using Minwax Urathane from Lowes and had excellent results. Two coats should do it. Capt. George

Does anyone know how to remove a water stain out of the teak and holly floor in the master state room that turned the area somewhat black? Mike

i had a similar situation on a teak pulpit inlay but never on flooring. Sanded down the varnish and used a teak bleach cleaner to get it blond again, then put on some new varnish. I had to use a belt sander to get the wet layer off but it was all worth it in the end. If you do sand down to bare wood it will end up lighter for a couple of seasons.
