GPS Antenna for IPad? - MichFan - 07-01-2020

Can anyone recommend an iPad external GPS antenna (maybe plug into lightening port)? I’d like to use Navionics on my IPad for backup but my iPad does not have a cellular radio / GPS antenna. I use Navionics on my phone but looking to add to iPad for larger screen.

Has anyone done this by adding a GPS antenna?

As always thanks for the input.

I use the Bad Elf GPS Pro with my old iPad for Navonics. It works great, but there is a slight delay in speed compared to my Raymarine GPS\Fishfinder

Thanks — that’s exactly the type of set up I’m looking for. Appreciate feedback from someone that has experience with it. I’m just looking for a back up system for redundancy.

Thanks again.

I also use the Bad Elf GPS with the Navionics app.  It works great.  Make sure to download the right charts when you have a WiFi connection before you head out.

The bluetooth/app eat up a lot of battery though.  You may need to get a high output charger plug for the iPad that goes in the DC outlet on the helm as the iPad can't draw enough current from the standard plug to charge while running the app.

Also recommend getting the iPAD ram mount.

Is the external GPS receiver needed if I already have a new IPAD that has GPS already in it? If it helps for better accuracy I would purchase it, but if accuracy is the same I would rather have less plugged in. Thanks for your help.
