Windlass - dudley - 07-22-2021 1992 3300 open. Want to purchase a windlass. Any suggestions on a setup horizontal vertical that works well for this boat. Boat is in the Great Lakes sand bottom mainly. I know the more chain the better however how do I determine minimum necessary? Also I’m not sure if wiring for windless in anchor locker is factory or not. Any insight into the wiring that is already present. This helps add a little weight to the bow since Open's tend to ride a little bow up and the added weight helps the anchor set. I've perch fished in some pretty nasty weather and have never drug anchor. I have foot controls mounted to the port side of the hatch which make it easy to retrieve. The issue with Tiaras of this vintage is the rope locker is not very deep. With my 3300 I need to be up in the bow to retrieve using foot controls and hand guiding the ride into the locker to prevent a bunch up. My last boat was a 2700 open. I had access to the locker from the cabin, so I fabricated 1/2” aluminum as a backing plate and mounted a horizontal windlass directly onto the hatch from the deck. I cut out the bottom of the locker and reg passed a new bottom deeper, ultimately adding about 18”s in depth. I never once had a tangle or bunched up rode, and had 600’ of 9/16 8-plait with 50’ of chain. Modifying my 33 rope locker is on my todo list. As for wiring, you need to follow abyc standards. My setup has 0ga wiring, with the breaker mounted as close to the battery connection as possible. Yours may already presided from the factory. My 27 was but only used 8ga wiring and needed to be larger gauge. |
