Repower an '84 3100 open with V6 or V8 diesels - SaKiawa - 09-05-2021 Has anyone repowered an '84 3100 open with V6 or V8 diesels? My preference would be the Mercury V8 370hp but if the fitment will not allow, then the Mercury V6 270 TDI is my next choice. I thought about the Hyundai Seasall S270 but the cost is prohibitively high. Any insight welcomed. TIA. RE: Repower an '84 3100 open with V6 or V8 diesels - Rhumb Chaser - 10-28-2022 I have an '83 31' Open with 454 Crusaders, and after research, going with the Yanmar 315 diesels as the repower choice. Thanks! RE: Repower an '84 3100 open with V6 or V8 diesels - cp4000 - 10-26-2024 I wonder if the exhaust ports would have caused an issue. Could be wrong but I think the Crusaders (Gas) like mine, the exhausts ports were below the waterline and on the diesels, they were above. RE: Repower an '84 3100 open with V6 or V8 diesels - ReelMagic - 10-27-2024 Being more pro on diesels than gas for a 37 or bigger the Yanmar 315 hp diesels as a replacement would be a direct replacement WRT to shafts, props (may need a pitch/diameter change) but are similar to the 454 gas you have... Several manufactures offered Yanmar 315's as well as gas 454's due to the similarities that allowed them to use the same shaft, struts, props (minor change required). Fuel economy is better with the Yanmar's but don't believe the expense justifies them. From experience, my buddy has Yanmar 315's in his 37 Cruisers Inc. express and has found out the same boat w/gas 454's is faster but uses more fuel (est. 10%) so the diesels don't justify the expense... Additionally, they were made for cars/trucks used offroad and not for marine use. Marinizing them for marine use has dissimilar metals touching each other that caused electrolysis. Additionally, the oil pans are sheet metal and rusted away due to the exposure to a salt environment. M2C RE: Repower an '84 3100 open with V6 or V8 diesels - Hooper - 12-02-2024 Cummins 6bta 330HP with ZF220 gears would be my preference. Above all, I'd stay far away from Merc's. |
