Low voltage startup 38 open - williamwalter - 10-17-2021
When I purchased my 38 open a few years ago I found the battery interconnect in open position.it was in this position through purchase and survey and for the trip up from Florida.Everything functioned fine.Basically connecting all six batteries.When I started learning my 12 volt system the manual said to leave it closed or off so you isolate the two banks. I did this but then started to have low voltage on start.suspecting the batteries were bad and the prior owner was masking the issue by connecting all the batteries I replaced them all. I load tested the old ones and some were bad so I thought I resolved the issue.Things seemed better but my issue remained. I put in digital volt meters direct to the two banks so I would have a better idea of what’s going on and am showing 12.8 volts on engine bank with the charger off but still get an almost start then clicking as if a weak battery ,loose terminal ,or corrosion in the system. I changed the mag relay on one side but that didn’t help.If I leave the interconnect open or hit the crossover switch the engines start fine.So assuming the batteries are fine I think that leaves a loose connection or corrosion somewhere in the system.Wondering if any 38 open owners ever experienced the same .

So I’m going to be curious as to the responses here because I feel I’m close to the same situation with my ‘99 4000 (Cats). My difference is both engines still start fine, but the starting is much peppier if I use the bridge. My first suspicion is batteries which are currently 10yrs old, and I have eyed for replacement soon. But what if that’s not the problem…mmmm…

10 years is old. Batteries usually begin degenerating after 5.
Never experienced the voltage issue mentioned by William, but was experiencing a couple of batteries cracking open. My mechanic felt Tiara wired the separate 4 batteries wired for 24 volts was incorrect so he corrected the wiring. So far so good.

On my 2003 38 Open I have 6 GEL batteries, 3 for the house & 3 for the engines which I replaced after 17 years. Prior to changing them I started to have an intermittent cranking problem with the Starboard engine.. Not all the time but several times over the season it cranked slowly but it always started... Used the parallel button and the starboard cranked much better.... Not sure if the batteries were the problem as I also changed the starboard engine ignition switch which which seems to have had an affect on the slow cranking.. After 17 years the batteries needed replacement so I believe that was the root issue although the ignition switch could have contributed to the problem... Checked all connections, power & grounds, to ensure all good. Problem gone...
