Moisture around porthole windows - Renegade93 - 11-09-2021
Hey guys, just joined here. I am getting some moisture readings around the porthole windows both sides as well as some moisture readings around the chain locker up front. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this, and what’s the best course of action. This is on a 93 tiara 36 open.

Welcome to the site, and welcome to the club with moisture around the portlights and rode locker.
With that vintage of a boat, (mine is an '86 36 Open) some moisture is to be expected.
For the portlights, part of routine maintenance should be rebedding them. Remove the portlight, clean all surfaces, inspect the cut out for any rot and repair as necessary. Rebed and reinstall the portlight.
This same maintenance is also necessary on the engine hatches, fish wells, etc. Anywhere there is a hinge where water could enter.
As far as the rode locker, it depends on where the moisture is being detected. But make sure your drains are clear (again routine maintenance). But if absolutely necesssary, the locker can be reglassed. My moisture was on the bow pulpit and I am just monitoring...

My new moisture meter shows water inside the foam under one of my salon ports. I have a new gasket on the way. Should I do anything else to stop the leak?

When taking out the porthole windows, I assume letting them dry out before rebeding the windows is in order? The moisture is the locker up from is showing up in the outside very v part of the boat around the locker. This seems to be the more tricky one to address.

When I did my portlights, I left them out for about a month to let everything dry out. I'm stored inside over the winter but still covered the openings with some left over shrink wrap loosely over the opening to prevent any birds from getting in. But you also need to look for wet rot and remove / repair those areas if necessary.
I dont have any suggestions for that area of the rode locker.

When you are bedding stuff like the portlights and hinges, what material are you using? 4200/5200?

I used Boatlife lifeseal. But you can use any marine grade silicone as well. There seems to be alot of disagreement here. Make sure you use clear in whatever you use. Once I used white thinking it would blend in, it doesn't!
If you use 5200, you'll probably have a terrible time getting the portlights out the next time they need maintenance.

I walked into their headquarters and set up an account. It took three months to get it working and get the gaskets. I only got the gaskets but with a recommendation from their engineering department to use Dow 732 clear silicone.
My current gaskets have the screen embedded in the gasket but they don't make that kind anymore.

Has anyone had any experience with the boatdry system? Any idea of the cost to do it? Also, when taking these port lights out, is it necessary to replace the gasket or will they be re useable if in good shape?
