Fireboy Automatic Fire Extinguisher - GeoDoc - 11-30-2021
My Halon bottle has timed out and needs to be replaced with whatever is used today. What have others done in this situation in terms of type, size and installation? I would assume that a new Fireboy would plug into the existing wiring???
How much money am I looking at?

I accidently discharged my system several years ago on my 2003 38 Open while working in the engine room. As you are aware the original system contained a gas that is no longer legal so I had to change to the currently approved system. Ordered one from FIREBOY-XINTEX. After discussions w/Tiara for size I purchased a FIREBOY-XINTEX MA2 Fire Extinguisher, HFC-227 w/Suppression Agent, 450cu.ft. Coverage, Model # MA20450227-BL... Cost was approx. $1000.00.... Expensive but cheap when you consider what its protecting. Worked with existing wiring/system....

Just looked at mine and it is FE241 and says coverage is 700. I guess that means cubic feet

Agree, the original one said 700 CF but after discussions w/Tiara I decided to go with 450 cf as they said it should be sufficient.... If you prefer FIREBOY-XINTEX makes the next size up which is 700 CF although its significantly more expensive.... I calculated the volume and it came out to be slightly over 450 CF but not by much. As a result I decided to go with 450 CF....

Although I think 700 is over kill, I have a 700 cf on order along with a new ES 5000 Series Automatic 5-Circuit Engine Shutdown System. $2500 plus 3-4 hours labor. Apparently my over ride switch is kaput too.

Here is the deal so far:
1. The new 700 cf Fireboy is 1.5" taller than the one I had which was a 2001 mfg date. Since it sits so close to the top of the engine room it was a major PITA to install. It took every bit of 4 hours labor for the installer to figure out what to do besides give up. The old base could not easily be moved down because there are wire bundles down there and the new one that came with the new bottle would not fit. The installer ended up making some round spacers out of Starboard to move the old mount away from the wall and clear the wires below when it was lowered. Also, the motor mount had to be slightly rounded off for the bottle to drop into place.
As far as replacing the engine shut down system, the es5000 would not easily fit in the space where the existing es3000 version sits so I am getting a new es3000. Strange, however is that both cost $389.00
Total for the job, inc. tax, was $3270.00
Before I would do this again I would explore using two smaller bottles but I would not consider going smaller in cf capacity.

I just replaced my 450 cu ft. cylinder for $930. Bought it at boat store. The new cylinder is 1 1/2” taller than the old one which was tight to the bulkhead, so I flipped the angle support which it sat on upside down and it worked out perfectly. The wiring was the same, so that was no problem. You can get the old cylinder recharged, but only by Fireboy for $1300 plus shipping!!
