Guess I'm being lazy, but asking rather than reading through manuals: what it the correct procedure, with respect to the vacuum head, when off shore and discharging overboard? Should the vacuum head be left on, turned off? Should anything other than the filtered air vent be left open during discharge pumping. Just want to be sure when I pump out I don't mess up the normal operation of the vacuum head.

when I pump mine out, I do not do anything relative to the head. My last boat had a vacuum head, and I never did anything to it either. all I ever did was turn on the discharge pump and let it fly!!! so to speak.
(I am assuming you are referring to pumping out the holding tank and not doing a direct pump out of the waste from the head to the water, which I do not think my Tiarra is equipped to do. )

There are no settings to allow a vacuflush head to pump directly overboard. Everything that goes now the head goes directly to the holding tank. From there you have the choice of pumping overboard (generally you must be at least 3 miles offshore and not in a no discharge zone) or changing the Y valve to pump out thru the deck fitting.

Thanks guys, I understand all that. Let me clarify. As the holding tank becomes full, there two choices for removal, dock side pump out being one, and direct overboard discharge through the macerator (if you have one) being the second. My question is this, if you decide to pump direclty overboard, from the holding tank via the macerator, should the vacuum head be turned "on" or "off" during overboard discharge pumping? Or does it matter either way?

I have never done anything with the head when using the macerator, that is I do not change any switches, worry about it etc. As far as I know, they are basically 2 different system, when you discharge the holding tank, it does not discharge the vaccum on the head. Flip the lever and let her fly!!!

No need to turn the Vacuflush off. Empty the holding tank from deck or maserrator....makes no difference

I never do anything, just pump. my o'board is closed. but i would like to know how it works. other than switching the valves to do so (thru hull open and y valve the other way), and being offshore
. do i just hit the macerator breaker? i would like to at least test this one of these days. when i got the boat, it was all switched to go overboard. I'm not sure why, but i was not able to use the deck fitting until i switched the valves.

I went thru the same thing, I what I figured out is, turn the macerator breaker on,set the y valve to the proper place, go back to where the valve is on the discharge overboard hose. Move that to open, and it should turn on. Look at the handle on the sea cock, mine is wired, and the switch to turn the macerator pump on is actually wire to the sea cock valve level, mine was a little touchy, that is if you pulled it too far, it wouldnt turn on, you should be able to here it 'click' or have someone in the cabin listen for the pump, when you see stuff stop coming out, you are finished. It's a little bit of PIA in my way of thinking. (I guess you could leave the valve for the pump over board open, so the switch is on, and control it from the breaker as well)

The proper procedure to be done in this order is
1) make sure the thru hull is 100% open
2) switch the Y Valve from the deck pump out to the overboard pump out
3) turn on the Macerator Pump
4) go to the back of the boat and wait for the bubbles which is the sign the tank is empty
5) turn off pump, switch Y Valve back to deck pump out and wire or lock it
IF you run the pump with the thru hull closed you will blow the duck bills out in the Macerator pump making it useless until the duck bills are replaced.

RickT: that is the procedure I use also; do you leave the vacuum head on or off or does it matter?
