General Dock Size Question - Newbie7749 - 01-07-2022

How much room is generally acceptable for two boats sharing a single well?  At my yacht club I have been assigned a dock that has a 23 foot well -- my boat (a 29 foot Coronet with an 11'4" beam) will be next to a 31 sea ray (with a 10'2" beam).  That leaves only a little over a foot within the well.  That seems pretty tight to me -- what do you think?

Only 1'6" is pretty close. I would ask the marina if they will be paying for the damage to my or the other boat when something happens. And with 9" each side something is going to happen.
A calm day is going to be hard. Add some wind or current and it's a disaster in the making.

General Dock Size Question - Misdirection - 01-08-2022

My dock neighbor and I each have older Tiara 3600's with 13'9" beams. Our well is 30' wide, giving us 2'6". He's tagged me once so far and has a bumper out now. 1'6" is really tight...

Definitely too tight. You need to leave room for fenders along the dock as well as between the boats unless there is at least 1-2 feet between the two

if you have 8" fenders on both sides, you're about done. I would see what else they have but consider wind and current in your thought process.

I too belong to a private club. It was built over 50 years ago when beam on boats was not what it is today. We have a few boats that have less than a foot between them. Our cost are 1/4 of what a commercial marina would be so everyone makes it work. You'll get used to it.

Thankfully I was able to secure a dock that is a little bigger. My 29 coronet (11'4" beam) will be sharing a 22 foot well with a little sailboat (with a 7'5" beam), giving us a bit over 3 feet to spare. As my friend put it, if you get a tight spot you will get very good at docking a boat - I hope that's right!
