Dripless seal replacement. How much effort? - Tantram - 01-30-2022

It looks like a have a leaky dripless shaft seal. What’s the level of effort replacing one of these bad boys? (Video of leak)

How often do seals go? Anything else I should look at before assuming a seal?

The good news is you have new seals on the shaft. I’ve never done it myself, but understand it’s a pretty simple process of:

- Remove the four screws on the black face plate.
- Pull the old seal back and cut it out.
- Slide new seal down the shaft and into place.
- Reinstall face plate.

You can even do this with the boat still in the water. My understanding is it doesn’t become more challenging until you use your last seal. Then the coupling has to be undone to install more (or just replace everything at that point.

I have done this. It can be easily done in the water--assuming everything goes smoothly. Check out this video:

However, in my case the screws had seen enough saltwater and age that the system would not disassemble easily. I essentially had to cut the entire system apart to get it off. No way to do that in the water. Yours look corrosion free and they have tweaked the design so that it is less likely to become impossible to disassemble. With that in mind I doubt you will have that problem but keep it in mind.
