Great Lakes Trolling - Newbie7749 - 06-28-2022
I am curious as to others experience trolling with a Tiara in the Great Lakes (particularly Lake Erie).
I have a 29 Coronet with twin 6.0L Crusaders (375 HP each).
At idle with both engines I go about 3.5 knots. I need to slow it down to 2.2 knots or so to effectually troll for walleye on Lake Erie.
Is it OK to just idle with one engine (and keep the other engine in neutral)? Any adverse effects in doing so? Will alternatively charge batteries at that low speed?
I am trying to avoid using trolling bags. Others (with different boats) that the trolling rods themselves / other gear will help slow the boat down too.

I have a 36 Open, I troll on Lake Erie with 1 motor. I completely shut off the second motor. Why waste the fuel? I can get down to about 2.0 knots, less if I'm headed into the waves.
I have found that when making turns in rougher water, it helps to have the motor on the outside of the turn running.

I fish the eastern basin of erie for walleyes. I run a 99 3100 twin 7.4 mpi's. I run on one motor with 2 48"bags. You will never get slow enough without bags, or install trolling valves. I shut off the other motor. I have extended rudders, so it steers like a dream at 1.5 -2.5mph. My auto pilot works flawlessly with the extended rudders. Just run the bags, as trolling valves can destroy your transmissions, if you forget to shut them off.
