2005 Tiara 3800 ZF transmission - Hemlock_SF - 08-14-2023

Hello all, came into dock yesterday after a bout a 10 hour problem free fishing trip and at the dock the starboard engine died when I shifted into reverse. It restarted right away and is stuck in forward (no neutral) I am assuming the worst and having a mechanic come look at it this week but has anybody had a similar experience ? About 1100 hours on the transmission

Doesn't sound great. I assume you confirmed operation of the control cable? Does it have a trolling valve? Did you check fluid and screen?

Beyond that I think you will have to wait for it to be pulled. If it does need to be pulled, I'd try to make lemonade out of it and do both sides at once, and take the opportunity to replace the main seals (assuming 6cta, they tend to weep as they age), and take a good look at the motor mounts, might be a good time to renew those.

Thanks for the reply Hiccup, mechanics initial assessment is burned out clutch and needs to be pulled for rebuild. He is thinking he can slide the shaft forward enough to pull it at the dock. Not sure how he will block up the engine or lift 300lbs but I will find out next week

Good luck, hopefully it's not too painful. Would love to hear how they remove the gear w/the boat at the dock...pictures would be a bonus! Assume they'll use some sort of a portable gantry.

Sorry to hear...are your ZF cable or electrotonic shift?
Had a failed solenoid cause similar....

Sorry for the late reply, the issue was a fused clutch and had it re-built. A couple of young guys were able to remove it in about a day. And put back in about the same. Did not see them do it but they said the gear was a little over 200 pounds. Total cost was about $12k  Bang Head

Wow, that price seems nuts!

Had two Twin Discs rebuilt in 2017 (on 2006 CAT C-9s in our Grand Banks) for $20,000 ($10 each).  Assuming 6+ years of inflation, probably about right.

FYI, these are great to have with the electronic shift as the LED tells you if there is an electrical issue right away.
