Replacing Inverter on 1998 Tiarra 3100 - Pknappe - 03-23-2026

I have a 1998 Tiarra 3100 and would like to upgrade my inverter/battery charger since I want to replace my lead acid house batteries with Lifepo batteries. I will also update my Voltage regulator from the Balmar ATS-5 on my starboard engine to the Wakespeed WS500, The Tiarra is setup so that the starboard alternator charges the house batteries and the port engine charges the starter batteries.

My issue is that as you can see from the above pictures, the existing inverter is a Heart Freedom 2000 and a Charles C-Charge are behind the wood bulkhead on the interior of the starboard panel. It looks like I can remove the lower teak panel which you can see is two pieces behind the upholstery piping. I can see several screws inside this space where this panel connects to the seat frame and to the side structure.

My questions to the forum are:

1) Does it seem practical that I can remove this panel to access the Heart inverter?
2) Can the Inverter be removed without removing this panel?
3) Leave the current inverter and replace the battery charger and just add a DC-DC converter to control the charge on the Lifepo house battery

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Peter

I do not think removing that panel will be in any way easy, possibly approaching completely unrealistic. I'd try to remove the inverter without removing the panel. It's jammed in there but looks doable, although may require removing a lot of other wiring that is in the way.

I understand the logic of adding a dc-dc charger but that is not a good idea. The inverter/charger units are designed to have a direct connection between the batteries and the unit. The input and output terminals of the inverter are one in the same. The batteries need to be directly connected to these terminals. I would look around for another place to mount the inverter as it looks like it will be tight. I'm not saying there will be a better spot but I would look carefully and consider all options.

The typical inverter install from the Tiara factory was an inverter/charger that charged the house bank and a second charger (the Charles) to charge the engine bank. You will want to stick with that arrangement. You might consider moving the engine bank charger to a different spot to make more room for the inverter/charger. There are really small and sealed chargers these days that are suitable for installation in the engine room. Make sure it is ignition protected if you have gas motors.
