Bottom Paint and Propspeed - DavidB - 12-14-2014
I picked up my boat this weekend after having yearly maintenance, bottom paint, and propspeed. I was extremely surprised by the increase in efficiency. Cruising at 3030 RPM, we were getting 26.8 gallons/hr at 28.7 mph. Previously we were averaged about 31 gallons/hr and 25mph at 3030RPM. Has anyone seen this much improvement ?

What paint did you use? I have a 31 Open and i am looking to change from ablative Micron to VC-17 and was wondering if anyone else had switched and got an efficiency gain with athe hard bottom paint with Teflon?

Never had any luck with Prop Speed. Had it done twice. Once by the yard. When that failed, it was redone by the Prop Speed People. It failed again. I think it has something to do with the shallow waters here on the West Coast of Florida. Lots of fine sand in the water and it acts like very fine sand paper. The Prop Speed is "Sanded" away over a period of time. I have heard very good reports about it on the East Coast where the water tends to be much deeper.

I just had the bottom stripped and repainted on a Tiara 3000 Open. I went from 24 gallons per hour at cruise 2300 RPM to 2O gallons per hour after the bottom paint.
Just about the same improvement you had.
