I'm looking to purchase a 32 open.  Hopefully 2005 or newer.  It seems the weight is up at almost 16000 lbs on these years.  What kind of performance and fuel economy have people noticed between the Crusader 8.1's, Cummin's QSB 5.9's & Volvo D6-310's?  I've read the Volvo's are a bit under powered and it's hard to get info on the Crusaders & Cummins.

Good discussion as this certainly helps me too. I’m all over the place with trying to decide which boat to step up to. I began with the 3100 Open and was convinced that was the one! Then I shifted to the 3500 Open, thinking it will afford much more room, thus allowing me to keep it longer. Not feeling like I need to “move up” quite as fast. While cruising last night with my wife in our humble 24 foot cc, I pointed out a 3500. Her response: “ that is way too big.” Back to the drawing board. I love the look of the 3200 and think it’s the perfect compromise. Is there price really that justified, however. Really cannot stomach spending close to 200K!

We’ve had a Tiara 3200 with 8.1L Crusaders for three years now and love it. Originally looked for a boat with Diesels but went with this one after sea trial. Performance is outstanding and it handles well around the dock. Mileage and range is not as good as with Diesels but it is not an issue on the Great Lakes. We cruise around 3300 RPM, about 27mph and burn around 30 gph total.

Performance is great and the 8.1L Crusaders are known for durability. Depending on your need for extra range, I would consider a gas boat in this model.

I second michfan opinion of the 3200 with 8.1 as I have absolutely no complaints as far as power and reliability. They are very quiet at idle speed and have almost zero vibration or exhaust smell, something to consider if you are trolling with it. You should be able to find something around 150k with crusaders.

Thanks for your response. I’ve really heard nothing negative about the boat and the more I think about it, the 3500 open may just be too much boat. What are your typical cruise power settings and fuel burns if you don’t mind me asking? Most of our trips will be day cruises with very little fishing, with a few overnights down to Boston Harbor, the Island and Maine. Would you agree with the assessment that the annual cost/upkeep of this type of boat is around 10% of the purchase price?

I think my 36 Open is the perfect size. I can take it out and dock it all by myself. Nothing against the 32, it's a beautiful boat, but a little more room never hurt anyone.

They have been professionally maintained since new and have plenty of power to get on plane quickly. No problems at all and they have 3300 hours on them.

3300 hours!  Wow!  That's awesome!  Fresh or Salt water usage?  How often do you change risers & manifolds?

Was reading this post and saw several responses from 3200 Open owners. Any of you by chance have info that shows center of gravity for this boat? I have decided to buy a 3200 open but want to install a lift first.

I couldn't reply specifically about center of gravity but the 3200 Open I bought had a La Conner Hydraulic Hide-a-Davit installed. It holds up to a 600# dink. I also have 200' of chain upfront.
