I did the usual bottom paint job, serviced the props, replaced all the zincs, and installed a new 5” black vinyl boot stripe over the chalky factory one in the gel coat. The yard was pretty quiet in late November so I decided to finally proceed with the repair of a soft spot in my swim platform that’s been bugging me for a few years now. 

I’ve had plenty of time to research the different repair options but ended up following the advice of my fiberglass guy and decided to do the repair from the top. The soft area was directly forward of the swim ladder. Probably caused by water infiltration from the hinge screws of the boarding ladder cover. Originally we were going to try to remove the core and retain the inside layer of fiberglass, but it proved to be too thin during the removal process. We ended up removing all of it, giving us a great view of the construction inside. It was surprising how heavy the squishy core was from being so waterlogged. There was still a bit of soft core around some of the edges so we dug it all out until we reached solid material. That area was then filled and a new fiberglass ledger was secured around the perimeter. A new plywood core was then wrapped in fiberglass cloth and resin and plugged into place. The layup process followed and a few days later we were ready to do the non-skid. I’ve never liked the factory nonskid from 1995, so opted to grind down the entire deck and apply Awlgrip Griptex. I’m a big fan of this product and used it when I did a much more extensive repair on the bow which I also posted a few years ago. Someday, I would love to do the entire boat. The color used is Oyster White, which is nearly identical to the Tiara gelcoat from 1995. Here’s a few pictures from the process. The deck is as solid as a rock now.... I'm really happy how it all turned out.

The removal of most of the seating and back cushions is pretty straightforward. The cockpit seating is on hinges except for the engine room hatch, which is secured by six screws that are easily removed after removing the sound insulating foam from the bottom of the engine room access door. The backrest to port of that location also had three or four screws that needed to be removed from the locker directly behind. The long backrest at the stern simply lifts straight up off of a gutter/track system as does the backrest adjacent to the icemaker. The interesting part came when I tried removing the helm seat area adjacent bench seating. When trying to remove the nuts from underneath I found the bolts would spin with them. Tiara used nylon locknuts and had sawed off the end of each bolt making unthreading nearly impossible without getting access to the bolt from above. The seat cushion is over the top of them and I could not find a way to remove it. Luckily, there were decent size washers underneath that I could get a flathead screwdriver under and apply downward pressure to remove those nylon insert locknuts. This took me several hours as access is pretty tight, climbing into the small compartments to access each one. It wasn’t until I had everything removed that I noticed how Tiara managed to put this together originally. Upon closer inspection, there are six holes visible from the inside of the compartments underneath that have been filled with 3M 5200 or equivalent. These are the access points where Tiara secured the seating to the seat base with six long screws. In hindsight, simply removing the caulking and removing the screws would have allowed me to lift the seat cushion off to access the top of the bolts and would have saved me a couple hours of anguish.

The project turned out great. My upholstery guy matched “Monticello-MOT 9805” which looks to be the exact same product from 1995 although I could not confirm as Tiara did not have any record of what was used in that era. It looks original and I couldn’t be happier with the end result.

I live in Michigan and ideally would like to take a 3D scan of a Tiara made live well and have it rebuild by a custom glass shop. Would anybody be willing to allow me to take that scan ? It's contact less done with a handheld 3D lidar scanner like many laptops have today to read your facial scan for login assist. 

I am also open to another solutions. Please post a picture if you added a live well to 3X00 Open.

The new generator is in Northern Lights 6kw that runs at 1800 RPM. I added compound mounts below the base tray so that the entire unit hovers above the engine room floor. I removed all of the old exhaust system and had the old discharge pipe into the port exhaust cut off and fiberglassed over. The new exhaust drops into a lift muffler that we installed on a shelf just below the engine room floor in front of the gray water tank then travels the old path behind the rear bulkhead towards the port where we added a Gensep (water separator) aft of the port fuel tank. A new thru hull was added just below the shelf aft of the port fuel tank for the separated water and the dry exhaust was routed to exit right above the waterline alongside the existing deck drain discharge.  The end result is remarkable. It’s so quiet I sometimes forget it’s even running. 

The 6kW provides plenty of power (50Amps) but I did need to add Dometic soft starts to both reverse cycle A/C units. The lock rotor amps needed to start the compressors of both units resulted with a hesitation when starting while on generator power. This was easily remedied with the addition of the soft starts. I also made sure that my primary loads (Hot water & Battery chargers) were distributed evenly between Line 1 and Line 2 on my electrical panel. This was important for the proper equal loading of the new generator.

I couldn’t be happier with the end results.
