My starboard Mercruiser 7.4L 454 gen 4 has finally died...likely threw a rod or dropped a valve. 2900hrs. I'm looking into repowering both mains with either crate 454's or complete drop in 454's mius trans and FWC. Does anyone have first hand experience with which route may be more cost effective? Other than replacing the oil and trans coolers and starter the other parts are in good condition. Michigan Motors sells the crate for $5K and complete drop in for $17K plus $1600 for FWC...quite the difference in price but I'm not sure what labor and yard time would cost for tearing down old motors and installing parts on the crate motor. I figure an expereinced mechanic could do that in 1-2 days?? any suggestions are welcome. Photos attached..

Hello All,
I have a '93 Tiara Open located in Newport Beach, CA. I bought it three years ago. Paid $50k for it. The boat was in great condition but with both 350 gas Crusader engines having 1600hrs. However, the previous owner kept all maintenance records and it was well maintained. I put about $20k into fixing areas that were old. Due to health issues, I decided to sell it but took "one more" trip to Catalina Island (26mi each way). You guessed it...half way back the port engine overheated. I quickly shut it off as I saw the temp gauge going up. I limped back to dock. There was coolant spray over the port engine that came from the overflow bottle.
After the engine cooled, I started the engine for a minute. Then when I went to start it again, there was a "clunk" and it wouldn't turn over. I had two mechanics look at it. One checked the oil and said the oil level was high. He pumped out oil that also had coolant to maybe seawater in it. One said "new engine", the other was more optimistic saying possible head or engine rebuild.
Does anyone have experience with a similar failure? If so, what was the finding? A cracked block was tossed out as was broken crank shaft? One said no way to know without pulling the engine from the boat.
Does anyone think the engine could be repaired without pulling the engine?
I appreciate any feedback you all have.
Many thanks!

Contacted yard that installed it and they put another new belt on along with new idler pulley. Just took boat out today and the same serpentine engine serpentine belt shredded again as soon as I throttled up as I was leaving harbor. I ran the engine at the dock twice after work was done for about 15 minutes and everything seemed fine. All pulleys are spinning by hand. Any suggestions?

Hello,
I'm new here, relatively new to bigger boats, and not a mechanic. The starboard engine on my boat is using more gas than the port engine, which is causing the boat to list to port. Starting with two full tanks late last year, the port tank is nearly 3/4 full whereas the starboard tank is just over 1/2 full. Both engines seem to run normally. There is no crossover valve to allow gas to flow from one tank to the other; each tank feeds the engine on the same side.

What are the most likely causes for the difference in how the two engines are using gas? I'm hoping it's an easy adjustment or fix.
The freshwater side on the port engine would start to overheat Then mechanic said change the raw water pump impeller's and thermostat we ran happened again the engine still started to run hot thought maybe it was low on cooling and coolant topped off. Ran the boat again with the hatch open and then observed coolant coming out the overflow and the hose going to the exhaust manifold was very hot about 187 on the heat gun. The mechanic is saying, maybe we need to have the heat exchanger sent out and checked out which I don’t have a problem doing I just don’t want to keep trying things and spending money if that’s not the case any ideas?

Hello!

I'm exploring the idea of repowering my Tiara 3100 with two outboard motors.
Maintenance for inboard motors can be very challenging in my area (Central America), so I'm looking for a solution that offers both reliability and ease of upkeep.

I was wondering if this would be feasible and any of you would have gone that route? I'd greatly appreciate any insights based on your experiences, as well as considerations regarding budget. Thank you!
