Port engine overheated and by the time the temp gauge and alarms went off the antifreeze was cooked. Thoughts as to cause, strainers don't appear blocked and seems drastic for a thermostat

Water pump Impeller, Elbows if they are over 5 years old, Heat Exchanger if it has never been cleaned.

Start with the easiest things, the water pump and the thermostat. Install a new impeller and replace the thermostat.

Also check the oil heat exchanger. Pieces of the water pump blades break off and block the flow here. Pull off the hoses and back flush it.

Put a heat gun on the elbows and check against the good engine.

That should keep you busy for next weekend.

Capt. George has it right.

I had the same problem, turned out to be a cascade of broken Alternator belt putting pressure on the water pump that went next and overheated the engine.  Fortunately i was just out of the harbor and limped back.  talking to the mechanic, the balance on both belts is related and if one goes the other will almost certainly.

Had to flush everything to get the broken impeller blades out after we replaced the water pump.

Good reminder to check belts and impellers at least yearly, if not more!
