I own a 2001 Tiara 3500 with 370 Cummins (5.9 liter). Question: Can anyone recommend how to decrease the engine noise? I do not mind the "diesel engine" noise, but my wife does.
Getting rid of the wife is not a solution. That would be expensive.
Look into "Sound Down" lead lined foam insulation. Shiny aluminum on one side. You will see it at the boat shows. I installed it with self tapping screws and fender washers. Comes in various thicknesses. Capt. George
I own the same boat and what do you mean but 'diesel engine noise'? These boats do not have underwater exhaust but I think they are pretty darn quiet already. The insulation due to the thickness of the engine lift if pretty good IMO. Is it the exhaust sound she doesn't like? Not much I don't think can done with that.
The Tiara 3500 Opens with diesels are bit noisy compared with their modern counterparts. The two things that will make the largest difference is the insulation already mentioned and the second is the hatch gaskets (main and inspection). These are rubber/neoprean gaskets that make the seal when the hatches are closed. The main engine hatch gaskets are flat I believe and the inspection hatch gasket is a D shaped rubber/neoprean. After a while they can get crushed, cut or come unglued. Buy new gasket material, remove the old ones, clean up the old glue residue with adhesive remover and glue the new gaskets in place. This should make a bid difference. Good luck!
I also have a 2001 35 open with the 6BTA'S , They are loud once the turbos kick in. I have been looking at the Sound Down material. It comes in various thickness', but I believe that the 1.5" would be able to fit under the drain lines. Has any one tried to use an adhesive ? I will also double check the gaskets on the main hatch. Thanks for the tip.
I have 6CTAs on my 3700. Engine noise at the helm is not that loud, but the high pitched whine from the turbo is the most noticeable sound. I think gaskets and sound insulation under the bridgedeck would help you. I have 2 inch sounddown insulation under my deck.
I also have the factory helm A/C that pulls air from the cabin, and lots of sound gets transmitted from the engine room through that duct. (the blower is in the ER). Since I don't use that any more (have installed A/C units under the seats) I plan to close that hole off, but there will still be some noise transmitted up both sides of the bridge area as those areas are open to the engine room below. Speakers mounted in the bridge deck sides provide another path for noise to the bridge. Back enclosures might help there. I guess my point is that there are multiple ways for ER noise to make it to the bridge.
