I installed new rod storage under the queen birth of my 3500 open. I wanted to match what I had seen other manufaturers offer as an option, but still allow room under the rods to store the double birth cushions.
I started with a piece of 1/2" king starboard with finished edges that I ordered from Boat Outfitters. I cut to length and mitered the edges to match the angle of the bed frame. Then I cut small pieces to form a channel into and out of which the king starboard can slide (in case quick access is needed).
I drilled 2" holes in the king starboard for the rod butts and 1.5" holes in the bed frame bulkhead to accept the rod tips. I later expanded these to 2" holes and added white grommets to finish off the holes and make it easier to get the rods in and out of, particularly when they are folded in half.
