I'm refinishing wood in my 3100 (teak veneers on bulkheads and cabinets) that was previously painted by the last owner. After stripping, cleaning, and sanding I first tried [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register] on bare wood but it came out too orange and glossy. I stripped it off and applied a [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register], which neutralized the orange and brought everything to an even brown color. I then finished with 3 coats [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register] topcoat. Unfortunately I may not have waited long enough for drying to apply the topcoat (directions say 24 hours, I waited 48hrs, but have now read you need 76+ hrs) and I think the mixture of oil/water-based products might have ruined it. The end result uneven stain distribution and a dull look. Im stripping and sanding everything down again.

What finishing technique and/or products should I be using? 

I think stain is necessary to fix some uneven coloration but maybe I should be using Oxalic acid for that.

Some ideas:
1. use an [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register], [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register], and [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register] top coat.

2. water based pre-stain, water based walnut stain, and finish with [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register].  I tested this on the back of a cabinet cover but the oil seems to still remove some stain onto the rag. It wasnt a very big test area, but Im worried this could make the end result uneven/blotchy again. Ive read that oil finish on top of water-based stain is okay, but I believe the teak oil products have solvents in them that could mess up the stain.

3. use no topcoat and leave the wood unfinished after staining? The environment is southern california - moderate to hot temperatures with low to moderate humidity

4. find a teak oil + stain product


TLDR: Refinishing teak veneered wood. I tried Varnish on barewood and then water based poly on oil based stain with bad results. Need advice.

I need to refinish the interior of my 2006 3200. Looks like it has sun damage on some of the wood working. My plan is to sand, pre stain, stain and polyurathane.

What did you end up doing? Any advice?

Be careful sanding, the veneer is thin. Tiara didn't use a stain, they just used a clear satin polyurethane which darkens the color a bit but keeps it looking natural, retaining the grain detail. That is what I have done when refinishing interior teak and it is easy and comes out great and matches the factory finish.
