The 3800 Open is an awesome boat! It has enough space to be comfortable, yet is not so large to be hard to maintain. It rides well in the rougher stuff and is relatively fuel efficient. It is one of the best hulls Tiara ever designed.

I know of a super clean 2004 located in Florida with the Cummins 480CE engines. The 480CE engines are the same engine as the Cummins 450, but with electronic fuel injection. They are slightly quieter, more fuel efficient and produce much less smoke than the 450s. See below for the approximate performance of a 38 with 480CE engines.

[Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register], since you appear to be leaning at cruising more than fishing, you might want to look at the 4000 Express. slightly larger the the 38 open, same almost everything else with WAYYYYY more room for "stuff" for cruising.

We completed the Great Loop on our 2003 Grand Banks Classic in 2009. The 1730 pumps on the 450hp Cummins started leaking at just under 500 hours and the previous owner had them replaced with rebuilt ones just before we purchased the Boat. We had Just over 50 hours on the rebuilds and they started serious leaking water from the seal again. This time I replaced them with new ones, which was not difficult to do as there was a lot of room. We sold the boat after completion of the loop. We now have a 35 Open with 370hp Cummins which we have had less than two years and it isn't much of a surprise that the seals are starting to leak. Has any one had experience with changing the pumps on a 35 Open? The pumps look very close to the Engine mount. Before I tackle this on my own, it would be helpful to know as I am not sure that I personally want to tackle much beyond that.

Clothing storage doesn't seem to be a problem for us.... Closet in the master holds more than needed for 3 weeks of travel. Mostly clothes for dinner to go out in when shorts/golf shirts aren't enough and jackets/rain gear....... I converted the other hanging cabinet, just outside the master stateroom, to hold my folding clothes by adding 3 shelves and removing the bar for hangers.... Works great for us. This way my wife has most if not all the space under the master bunk..... She generally does wash once, twice worst case, on a 3 week cruise.....  We don't anchor more than 1 or 2 nights at any one time. Batteries seems to support 1 night easily... Generally run the gen. during the day for several hours to make sure the batteries are fully charged..... Also replaced both TV's with flat panels, removed the turntable, and converted the panel above the stereo to allow access behind the TV's.... Lots of storage space for CD's/DVD's...

BTW we use to own a home in Southold (Bixedon Estates)... Where are you located and where do you keep the boat?

Fred we live in wading river and keep boat in brick cove marina. Been there for 20 years great area for boating and just far enough to feel like your getting away. Brick is just past bixedon estates.i noticed in 2004 they went to the flat panel tv.sounds like your boat is pretty much what I'm looking for.the only boat I looked at was a 2004 with the b plan.glad I saw it but I think I prefer the a plan setup.Bil

Know Brick Cove well.... We use to keep a boat there when it was known as "Youngs Marina" and now "Brick Cove".... Nice place and very convenient for traveling east or just in the Peconics.... We generally go to Greenport for a long weekend early in the season as a shake down cruise, Memorial Weekend last few years.

1/2) Tough to answer your questions as the comfort as the only ones to sleep on the converted dinette is my grandchildren who seem to sleep quite fine... No complaints any way.  Same for the backrest converted to a pullman.  My son and daughter-in-law may have slept on the dinette once and didn't complain..... It's mainly myself and wife for overnights and extended cruises.......... We don't carry the cushions unless we plan to use the dinette for sleeping..... When we do carry them they are stored on the side of the master bed as we use the storage under the master for our clothing, should say my wife's clothing, extra pillows, blankets, etc......

All port holes open on my 38 plan A. Not sure for the Plan B...

Have not changes the seating or added the tackle station.....

All things considered the boat is great for 2 and sleeps 5 as needed......

Sorry, I don't check this sight often enough, so the best way to get me is call or e-mail me.

The 480 CE Cummins is the exact same mechanical 8.3L inline 6 engine as the 6CTA 450 with the exception of a fully electronic fuel injection and redesigned head. I have not heard of any problems with the 480 CEs. The 480s are quieter and more fuel efficient. There is nothing wrong with the 450s, but the 480s were an improvement. January of 2006 brought on the Cummins QSC which is a fully electronic version with a redesigned block. It is still an 8.3L inline 6 diesel, but that is about the only similarity. The 490s are even quieter, much less smoke and even more efficient.

All three engines are good choices.
