spoke to the nearest cummins dealer and was quoted $5500 for both after coolers for a maitenance and acid wash, they do have to travel approx 2 hours to get to the boat, is that a fair price???

Not sure how handy you are but I did my aftercoolers (Cummins 6CTA's 450hp) several years ago.... Easy to remove from the engines and reinstall.. Disassembled both and had the aftercoolers cleaned/pressure tested. All good. Expenses included new "O rings" (4 required for 2 aftercoolers) approx $40.00. Cleaning/pressure testing cost approx $100.00 for both .... I've attached a link relative to aftercooler maintenance

Who do you use locally for normal repairs and maintenance? With Seaboard's tutorial, any competent, run of the mill guy could perform the maintenance. FYI, Seaboard offers over the phone/skype/facetime consulting for an hourly fee. My marina handyman used it (I paid, of course) for my engine monitors and fuel sender and it was very cost effective. Especially so if you're faced with a $5,500 alternative.

As previous posts it's not a difficult job and any decent radiator shop can pressure test and clean the cores. But if you aren't comfortable with a job like that you are better off paying someone else that has experience. Not trying to scare you out of it but if the AC fails you could be rebuilding or replacing the entire engine. Did you try Slater out of grand haven? They have a great reputation. not sure how far they venture out of grand haven storage but worth a call to at least get a competitive estimate. Drummond marine in Holland has a couple of great diesel techs that are very well respected. If you call them ask for Moe or Ed.
Try calling AIS equipment in greand rapids they can probably have a service truck stop by your boat and do them in a couple hrs for less than your estimate and I guarantee you they know what there doing.
