I also own a 38 Open but its a 2003 and have looked for the filter several times but have not been successful to date.. I contacted Tiara several years ago and they said its on the starboard side of the boat in the engine room close to the forward bulkhead and the hull. Above/around the hot water tank. Couldn't find it. Maybe you will have better luck.... Not sure if that's the source of the smell but I've been told the filter has to be replaced if liquid from the holding tank gets to the filter as a result of overflowing the holding tank. Where is the smell coming from, the engine room, the head itself, ?????

thanks for the reply, its weird, you can just smell it around the cabin or even in the engine room. Not sure if some of the tubes or pipes may be cracked as well. Im doing a cleaning of the tank as well to see if that helps.

Not sure if you are aware but the vacu-flush system is located in the engine room under the floor where the ladder is. It's against the forward bulkhead. I agree, cleaning the tank itself, located under the aft floor grate in the engine room. You may want to flush the entire system with fresh water, pump it all out and see if that helps.... Another cause may be the toilet itself. Does the toilet hold water or is it leaking down? If leaking down then I suggest you change the ball seals in the toilet itself. Gases could be coming back through the seal. Does the system hold vacuum M2C

Found the filter directly in front of the starboard engine on our 2004 38 480-ce. Mounted horizontally.

Congratulations on finding the filter. I still have NOT. When you say in front of the starboard engine where exactly do you mean... On the forward bulkhead in the engine room. Near the top, bottom. Please help...
