2002 3800 Open. My horn sounds like I have stepped on a squeaky toy. I can barely hear it not to say another boat that I might want to signal.

It looks like you can open a panel on the bottom of the hardtop to get at it. Is there room up there for a small compressor to feed a decent horn?

If not, could someone recommend a good electric one?

Not sure what your problem is but it's very similar to the one I've had more than once on my 2003 38 Open.. Here's what I found.. First the air compressor is located by the steering station, open steering station and there is a removal panel on the starboard side. Compressor is located there... My experience is not with the compressor but with the horns themselves. Go on the hardtop & remove the three screws holding each of the horn covers. Inside you will find a plastic (clear) diaphragm & gasket. Most likely the diaphragm is worn/dirty and the inside of the horns you will find dirt/salt... Clean all especially the inside top of the tube which forms a seal with the diaphragm... Sand smooth as that is what causes the diaphragm to vibrate, makes the horns sound... Do this yearly and my horns are fine....  Believe your horns are made by FLAMM, Fultone model 623511.. You can order replacement diaphragms as a kit 2132311 or at least I did several years ago.. I ordered these kits from Zoro.com and they were for a 2.5" horn. I got up there and found out that I have 3.0" diameter horns. I was within the 30 day return window and sent them an email. They answered promptly and said that they would refund my 30 or so bucks and I could keep the kits.  Apparently they did not carry the ones I needed.

While I was up there I cleaned everything and the "honk" was 80% improved.

Same problem on my 2003 3800 Open. Same dumb move ordering the 2.5" kit instead of the 3" one. Here's the 3" kit:

Worked like a charm for me. It's cheap plastic, but when it breaks I'll spend the $6 and 5 minutes again and be back to a good horn!
