Joined forum to throw out a critical question. I have a 2008 39C with CAT C9’s, and Twin Disc 5065 gears. I bought the boat in 2019 and had the first failure on the port side engine on the way up from Miami right after buying the boat. We had the transmission rebuilt by Great Lakes Power and ran the boat successfully for about 200 hours before it failed again. At that point, we decided to replace with a new transmission. Unimaginably, this past weekend, after another 200 hours, the transmission failed again. We are just beginning the diagnostics and plan to have a thorough investigation once again. Has anyone heard of this? Is the Twin Disc 5065 the common gear paired with the C9 ? Any insight would be hugely appreciated. Super frustrating and beyond costly. But I just want to get some answers so we can resolve. Thank you.
Sorry to hear about your troubles Who do you have working on this? I see your homeport is Niantic, CT, have you worked with Portland Boat Works at all? I purchased a 4400 Sovran from them, they are EXCELLENT in their knowledge and mechanical ability. I would also get the Cat and Twin Disc support people involved as well. Keep us updated.
I’m at Port Niantic. They are the “go to” diesel mechanics in Niantic. they did the install of the last transmission and worked with Matt from Great Lakes Power out of NH who is the authorized Twin Disc dealer. This time I’m going to pull in CAT and Tiara to see if we can figure out what is causing this chronic gear failure. Replacing it has not worked. Wondering if others have this combo of gear and engine. And if they have had any issues. I think I’ll reach out to Portland and see if they have any contacts or thoughts on how to proceed with diagnosis here. More minds the better at this point. Thank you for that suggestion.
