okay well three years later I finally got it!! With help from another Sovran owner!!! On the Sovran they have little handles to pull with, so you don't have to use the throttle/shifter levers. To make this work I found this: don't do a 'long steady pull', you have to grab the handles and jerk it up and then back. You have to try and pop it out of the mounts and then you can pull it back towards you. the upward pop was the key for me!! The mounts they use for this are the same they use to close the hatch over the swim platform ladder. Note you have to give that a good pop as well, so you are doing the same thing with the helm station. Just thought I would update!!!

The book showed 2 grab handles, I see it hinged on the bottom, the book mentions friction latches. so I put my hands into the grab handles, and pulled.... nothing. it seems I need to pry from the back (forward on the boat) of the compartment. I did not want to do this as I was afraid to breaking the fiberglass.

Any ideas?? Do I just pull harder?? TIA.
Give it a quick hard jerk.
Thanks! That's what I did. The other thing I found is to pull up as best you can, you might not get it to go back, but it will come lose, now that it is lose, just pull as you suggest!! It was frustrating for a while. Now once I have it, I cant believe how neat the workmanship is behind that thing!!
