A traditional inverter won't handle the startup load of the air-conditioning unit and even if it did, the amount of batteries needed to operate it for any length of time would be impractical.
I have seen before AC alternators that could handle the load of the air-conditioning depending on engine RPM. I believe at idle, they won't be able to handle the startup load, off idle and they should be fine. The AC alternators that can handle this load won't be cheap, but they are less expensive and require less maintenance than a traditional generator.
