If the boat moved under its own power and they didn't run up the power to where it was slipping under heavy load then you are probably ok. It had to have some oil in it or it wouldn't have gone into gear in the first place. if the clutches slip and heat up (from low oil pressure) they can warp which will show itself as oil that has a burnt smell to it and or a shaft that rolls while in neutral. Misdirection is spot on. Get some oil in it for the winter layup. if you suspect water intrusion and the boat is already out of the water, fill the gear case to the top with oil to imurse all internal parts. Drain down to proper level prior to spring launch.
