Go to the Garmin Site for the latest SW load for a 7612. I did mine recently and believe the latest is version 19.00.

To answer the question regarding difficulty. Its not.. You download the SW to a laptop, then execute the downloaded file. That will unpack the SW onto a SD card (needs to be 8GB minimum). Once on the SD card you move the card to the 7612 and turn on. It should sense the card and ask if you want to upgrade. If it doesn't there is a soft key to allow updating. Look at the manual for the rocedure.
There a second method which requires the Garmin Active Captain app on an IPAD/IPHONE/Smartphone. The Garmin procedure can be found on the Garmin site as well..... Your current version if found using softkeys for Software version. Should also see version when unit it first turned on.
