As long as the frig is ac and dc then yes, it can run off just the batteries. Why did Tiara not wire? WHo knows. Maybe it is because standard is the icemaker and the icemaker only runs on 120, so the standard wiring for that area is 120 only. BUt, you can wire it yourself I would assume to make it run on 12vdc.
